The basic set up is familiar for Final Fantasy games - a bunch of young heroes are thrust in a series of world-changing events, but Type 0 mixes things up by having an active world. No longer do the cities, enemies and dungeons just sit there waiting for the heroes to visit - stuff happens around them.
This means that some missions have a strict time limit that objectives need to be completed within, adding a new intensity other Final Fantasy games haven't seen in the past. There are additional side quests that offer extra rewards, and naturally this wouldn't be a Final Fantasy game if there wasn't a moogle. Here, he's the one that gives you your quests.
But the really exciting part about this game is the strategy elements. There are still the usual character leveling and combat, but there are also sections where you'll be commanding units and armies around. All together, it looks like this game has a greater scope than other Final Fantasy games - where those focus on the events happening to a few individuals, this game looks like it's all about nations clashing on epic battlefields with one another.
