Kojima: Japan doesn't need West success

In an interview with Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima has said that the Japanese games industry has an 'obsession' with worldwide successes, querying if it even needs such success.
"Do we really need to succeed worldwide?" he asked. "That's what I'm really wondering about. Everyone talks about overseas, overseas, but nobody's really thinking about what needs to be done if we want to succeed. We get obsessed with thinking about worldwide because we've had previous success with games and anime worldwide, but none of those successes matter nowadays," he went on.
"When you're making a game, it doesn't matter what nationality the team is -- I think there was a lack of understanding among Japanese developers on that issue. It all comes down to the team you have. Even if I brought in the best developer in the world, it won't result in anything if nobody around him understands what he says," said Kojima.
He also acknowledged a gap between East and West development. "It's hard to feel this when you're in Japan, but there is a gap opening between the West in terms of pure quality," he said.
Continuing on, he also discussed the structure of Japanese businesses. "Everything needs to be separate, down to the office and pay structure," he adds. "There are loads of talented developers overseas, but you can't get them unless you spend the money ... It's the difference between what you pay a Hollywood star versus a Japanese film star."
Kojima also acknowledged the failure of some to understand cultural differences.
"To put it in an extreme fashion, Americans like games where you have a gun and you're shooting at space aliens," he said. "If you don't understand why that's fun, then you shouldn't be making games for the world market; you don't need to. I mean, Japanese people might say 'Why space aliens?', but Americans will counter with 'What's with these games featuring these feminine-looking boys fighting in Japan with these huge swords?' It's no wonder the target audience for a lot of games is getting so compartmentalized.

All Future Kojima PS3 Games To Have PS Vita Versions

One of the biggest announcements from Konami's pre-E3 conference was a new feature called "Transfarring," which allows you to play games on a portable gaming device such as the PSP and PlayStation Vita, and then transfer the save to the PlayStation 3 to continue the game on there.

In a recent episode of the Kojima Productions podcast, the hosts confirmed that all future major titles for Kojima Productions will support transfarring and therefore have PSVita versions.

"We have a plan moving forward, where all of our major titles will have this transfarring functionality. So you'll buy the next big game from Kojima Productions on PS3, and there'll also be an NGP version [PSVita] and take it on the go."

This essentially means that the PlayStation 3 versions of every one of Kojima Productions' future games will already have the exclusive "Transfarring" feature

James Voice Actor Speaks Out About Silent Hill HD Collection

Konami’s Silent Hill HD Collection on PS3 will feature new voice performances, with the original voice work being re-done to compliment the HD release. This news has met with mixed reactions from fans, mainly due to the fact that changing the voices of characters like James, Maria and Heather will almost certainly alter the unique experience and atmosphere created by both Silent Hill 2 and 3.
TGL got in touch with Guy Cihi, the voice of Silent Hill 2 protagonist James Sunderland and asked him if he would be returning to voice James in the HD Collection and if he knew anything about being re-cast. He had some blunt words for Konami and made the following response:
“Konami knows that they owe me residuals for all previous unauthorized re-uses of my mocap and vocal performances. It would appear Konami is seeking to avoid further liability by changing the voice in their latest re-use of the SH2 materials. However, if any of my mocap appears in the new release, Konami will be liable for unauthorized reuse of my performance. Like Gump’s momma said, “Stupid is as stupid does.” It would have been much better for everyone had Konami simply made me a reasonable offer…”
He added further; “I’ll get around to seeking compensation through the courts one of these days. I simply don’t have the time for it right now. I hope this doesn’t bum out any fans… It’s just business as usual on the production side of games.”
The Silent Hill HD Collection will include HD remasters of both Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3. A release date  for the PS3 collection has yet to be announced.

Silent Hill HD Collection Is PS3 Exclusive

Konami has confirmed that the Silent Hill HD Collection will only be coming to the PlayStation 3 when it ships this fall. The package will include HD updates for Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3, which were originally released in 2001 and 2003, respectively. Konami has also added all-new voice acting, as well as PlayStation Network trophy support.

New Silent Hill HD Collection Info

Since the announcement Konami did on the Silent Hill HD collection just a couple of weeks ago, little information was revealed until today’s press interview behind closed doors.
For those who are wondering as to what platform Silent Hill HD is going to be on, the developer is still disclosing the details as they’re still on the process of remaking it from the ground up. However, the new information that they shared to us today is that the HD remake will be receiving a new cast of voice actors.
Yes! If you fell in love to the voice overs of James Sutherland in Silent Hill 2 and Heather in Silent Hill 3 [like me], you might not be to hear them again in this new remake.
